Craving Jam During Pregnancy

Can mothers-to-be enjoy the Jams they crave? Many people have asked this question and I began to wonder as well. So I did a bit of research and this is what I have found. Please note that my research does not include freezer jams which are processed differently than jarred Jams.

Yes, you can enjoy Jam while you are pregnant. There is nothing bad, or dangerous about enjoying your jam as an expecting mother.

Even peanut butter is safe to enjoy. According to the March of Dimes, there is no evidence linking peanut eating during pregnancy to peanut allergies, so as long as you do not have a peanut allergy, your sandwich is safe to eat.

It has been suggested that Jam or Preserves are a better choice for the mother to be as they are made with chunks of fruit rather than just the juice as Jellies are. The chunks of fruit in Jam will provide additional nutrients as well as fiber.

Also, something to take note of would be the amount of sugar and the type of sugars used to make your Jam or Jelly. It is commonly suggested that we should all avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup in our diets, so it should be with the expectant mother.

Choose high-quality during pregnancy

The majority of your higher-end Jams, Jellies, and Preserves will use pure cane sugar, organic sugar, or even honey as a sweetener (and yes according to information from The Baby Center honey is safe for your unborn child, however, should not be given to infants or young children).

Gourmet or Homemade Jams are processed in a manner that usually helps to retain nutrition that can be lost in many of the mass-marketed jams.

When enjoying your Jam and your Peanut butter be aware of the calories, as both can be high, but also high in good protein and other nutrients to help your child develop.

Take care in choosing your bread. If you can, avoid the mass-marketed bread and enjoy the bakery fresh. You'll be doing yourself some good.

Always remember to check with your doctor if you have unanswered questions or uncertainties about anything you may crave during your pregnancy. The Babble Out website offers food guidelines for pregnant women.

On rare occasions, some mothers-to-be experience gestational diabetes and should avoid jams, however, this is something that should be discussed with your doctor.
